Relative Rates Graph

Five lines are shown on this graph to represent the increase or decrease in illnesses in the United States associated with five types of bacteria. The time frame 1996-1998 is used as a baseline.

The number of laboratory-diagnosed cases of infection with Campylobacter decreased significantly from the baseline to 1999, then remained fairly steady through 2000. The number of cases decreased further in 2001, then slightly increased in 2002. A slight but steady decrease was seen from 2002 through 2006.

The number of laboratory-diagnosed cases of infection with STEC 0157 increased in 1999, remained steady through 2000, then decreased in 2001. The number of cases increased slightly in 2002, then dropped radically in 2003. It decreased even further from 2003 to 2004, but steadily increased again between 2004 and 2006.

The number of laboratory-diagnosed cases of infection with Listeria decreased slightly in 1999, then decreased more significantly through 2002. The number of cases increased in 2003, then decreased again in 2004. Another slight increase was seen between 2004 and 2005, but the number of cases slowly and steadily declined between 2005 and 2006.

The number of laboratory-diagnosed cases of infection with Salmonella remained about the same through 1999, then decreased slightly in 2000, and increased slowly until 2002. Then the number of cases decreased slightly in 2003 before slowly but steadily increasing until 2006.

The number of laboratory-diagnosed cases of infection with Vibrio decreased slightly until 2000, then increased significantly until 2004. A slight decrease was seen between 2004 and 2005, before increasing again in 2006.
