Prior to this command, RADM Hewitt concurrently served as Assistant Commandant for Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Information Technology (CG-6) and the Coast Guard's Chief Information Officer (CIO). During the CIO tour, RADM Hewitt was detailed to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as their acting CIO where he led the department’s infrastructure technology transformation project. Other tours of duty include Project Manager for both the National Distress and Response System Modernization Project (NDRSMP) known as “Rescue 21,” and the Marine Information for Safety and Law Enforcement (MISLE) Project under the Acquisition Directorate, Coast Guard Headquarters; Commanding Officer, Electronics Support Unit Boston; Executive Officer, Communications Area Master Station Pacific, Point Reyes Station, California; Project Engineer at the Omega Navigation Systems Center in Alexandria, Virginia and the Electronics Engineering Center in Wildwood, New Jersey; and Operations Officer on the USCGC BITTERSWEET.
RADM Hewitt, a native of Oregon, is a 1978 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with a Bachelor of Science; as well as a 1982 graduate of Purdue University with a Master of Science Degree; both degrees are in Electrical Engineering. In 2000 he received a Master's Certificate in Information Technology Project Management from George Washington University and is a certified Project Management Professional.
RADM Hewitt’s military decorations include two Legion of Merits, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and the Commandant's Letter of Commendation.
