I live in Columbia, South Carolina where there is no subway or elevated rail service. However, we do need audible pedestrian signals.

In discussing this issue with the state department of transportation, we have learned that they are willing to put in audible signals, but feel they need more guidance from the federal department of transportation. For example, what type of signal should be purchased? They understand about the standards, but feel they don't want to spend any money until a type of signal has been standardized.

I believe some kind of standardization of signals should be determined. I want to know that the audible pedestrian signal works the same way in Washington, DC as the one in Columbia works. I know that situations are different in all locations, but some king of standardization needs to be made in order to help the poor floundering state transportation departments.
