Our clay paver manufacturing company was disturbed at the January 2001 recommendation of the Access Board that clay pavers are undesirable in reduced vibration zone in public sidewalks.

We now understand that the draft guidelines do not contain the above requirement for surface smoothness. It appears that the research conducted by the University of Pittsburgh, Department of Rehabilitation Science & Technology indicated clay brick pavements produce less vibration and less work to traverse than poured concrete.

We wish to commend the Access Board for removing the earlier restriction of unit pavers and retaining section 1102 as currently drafted without restricitons on the use of segmental pavements within the pedestrial access route and reduced vibration zone.

Very truly yours,
