TVA
Commemorates 70th Anniversary
May
21,
2003
TVA will commemorate its 70th anniversary Thursday, May 22, with an employee
program entitled“Seven Decades of Service,” which will
be simulcast live to employees throughout the Tennessee Valley.
TVA Chairman Glenn McCullough Jr. will address employees in the simulcast,
which begins at 11 a.m. in the West Tower auditorium at TVA’s Knoxville
office complex.
“The
men and women of TVA are the keys to its success and longevity,” McCullough
said. “For the past 70 years, the people of TVA have helped
to enrich the lives of the people of the Valley. Those important
endeavors
continue today and will for the next 70 years and beyond.”
Nebraska
State Senator David Landis will perform a historical portrayal of the
late Senator George Norris of Nebraska, who is known as the Father
of TVA. The TVA Chattanooga Singers will sing the national anthem.
The
anniversary program not only reflects on TVA’s history and commitment
to the people of the Tennessee Valley, but also looks ahead to the future.
As
part of the New Deal, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created TVA — “a
corporation clothed with the power of government but possessed of the
flexibility and initiative of a private enterprise” — with
the signing of the TVA Act on May 18, 1933. Senator Norris was the
author
of the Rural Electrification
Act, which is credited with bringing power to American farms and public
power to the Southeast and his own state of Nebraska.
TVA
is the nation’s largest public power producer and is completely self-financed. TVA provides
power
to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3
million consumers in seven southeastern states.
