TVA’s
Bull Run Fossil Plant Named Best in Nation
Dec. 9, 2003
OAK RIDGE, Tenn.
— TVA’s Bull Run Fossil Plant has been named the most
energy efficient coal-fired power plant in the nation for the second
year
in a row by Electric Light and Power magazine.
The plant has
been ranked among the nation’s top 10 most efficient
plants by the magazine every year since 1995.
The utility industry
magazine annually ranks the top 20 generating units by various criteria.
In the November 2003 edition covering calendar
year 2002 performance, Bull Run, located near
Oak Ridge, Tenn., won top honors for heat rate—a measure of the
efficiency with which a plant turns fuel energy into electric energy.
“This second
consecutive top ranking in energy efficiency is a credit to the excellent
performance by Bull Run and TVA Fossil Power employees,” TVA
Chairman Glenn McCullough Jr. said. “The men and women of
TVA are committed to providing affordable, reliable power for
the benefit
of the people of the Tennessee Valley.”
A second TVA coal-fired
plant and two TVA nuclear plants also scored in the rankings by total
annual generation. Cumberland
Fossil Plant,
in Cumberland City, Tenn., placed 11th in net generation by
coal-fired plants.
Sequoyah Nuclear Plant, near Chattanooga, Tenn., ranked
ninth and Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, near Athens, Ala., ranked
10th
in net generation
by nuclear power plants. Some 572 coal-fired
plants and 65 nuclear plants are included in the surveys.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider, and its power
system is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries
and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven
southeastern
states.
