Download Quicktime here) The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of Civil Rights and the Office of the Chief Information Officer held a series of special Section 508 briefings for U.S. Department of Commerce employees. In total 575 Commerce employees attended the briefing at one of the four separate locations.
“Section 508” requirements in the Rehabilitation Act and in the U.S. Federal Acquisitions Regulation state that products and technologies procured by the Federal Government must be accessible to people with disabilities, both employees and members of the public. Technology covered includes computer hardware and software, Web sites, phone systems, fax machines, and copiers, among others. The briefing will also address the guidelines for telecommunications products and equipment covered by section 255 of the Telecommunications Act. An advisory committee to the U.S. Access Board is currently reviewing and updating the access standards for telecommunications, electronic, and information technology covered by both of these Sections.
