Usage Restrictions:

  • Please register at the Hadley Centre so that they can prove their datasewts are widely used and so they can get funding.

Detailed Description:

  • See the Hadley Centre for more details. A climatology (1961-90) is provided which is based on the variance adjusted version HadCRUT2v as this has been corrected for changes in the numbers of stations/SST observations in the individual grid-box series. This is the current IPCC global and hemispheric time series which is based on the methods in Folland et al. (2001a).The air temperature page is from monthly station temperature time series while the SST is from the HADSSTV2 SST analysis. A version that is variance corrected (HADCRUT3V) is available. The technique for the variance adjusted dataset can be found at Jones et. al (2001).

Note the companion dataset CRUTEM3 Air Temperature Anomalies. Also note that if you would like a climatology, there is a 1961-1990 LTM file based on the HADCRUT3V data.

  • Please note: If you acquire HADCRU3 data products from PSD, we ask that you acknowledge us in your use of the data. This may be done by including text such as HADCRU3 data provided by the NOAA/OAR/ESRL PSD, Boulder, Colorado, USA, from their Web site at http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/ in any documents or publications using these data. We would also appreciate receiving a copy of the relevant publications. This will help PSD to justify keeping the HADCRU3 data set freely available online in the future. Thank you!
