GSA Marks RI Courthouse CentennialCelebrations for the centennial of the federal courthouse in Providence, Rhode Island, opened with a formal ceremony on February 12, 2008. It was an auspicious gathering. GSA’s Commissioner of Public Buildings David Winstead joined Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr., and judges from the District of Rhode Island to mark the occasion. As landlord for the federal civilian government, GSA owns and maintains the historic courthouse, a magnificent building constructed at the turn of the 20th century as a post office, courthouse and custom house. Considered one of the finest landmarks outside Washington, DC, it was the city's third federal building—designed by the local architectural firm of Clarke and Howe in the Beaux Arts style. At the time, a monumental classical profile was a favorite of architects commissioned to design major public buildings. More about the Centennial Celebrations Index of Feature Stories
