Advancing Science with DNA Sequence—See the JGI in action!

photo of tour group views the capillaries of a sequencerExplore one of the largest dedicated DNA sequencing operations in the world at the Joint Genome Institute Production Genomics Facility in Walnut Creek, California. The tour will guide you through the historic significance of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) and the University of California’s role in sequencing the human genome and on to the genomes of many other organisms (plants, fish, bacteria, and fungi) that make up our biosphere. Then see the robotic instrumentation that has taken the art of DNA sequencing to an industrial scale.

Tours usually entail at least a one-hour commitment. For high school groups, the scenario can be expanded to include a half-hour DNA sequence assembly hands-on demonstration and a half-hour talk by one of JGI’s researchers on a particular facet of genome science.

Groups larger than twenty people are discouraged because of the facility’s tight confines.
