Directions for Climate Indices Time Series Analysis and PlottingPage

 

  1. Specify first time series
    Choose from the list. Descriptions of the time series follow the submit button.
  2. Optional:: Specify second time series
    Select if you wish to compare (correlation or cross-correlation plot) the two timeseries. Overlaying two plots is not available yet.
  3. Specify Year Range
    Optional: Plots or analysis will be calculated only for that year range. Lags are handled.... You time series may not have data in that range. In that case, the subset of years specified that exists is used. Please enter low to high year. Enter integers only.
  4. Action. Type of plot or analysis.

    1. Plot.
      Option will return a line or box plot of the time series. You may set the y-range (useful for comparisons). Please enter low to high. A running mean can be calculated. A simple running average for the month length is calculated. Any missing value causes the running mean to be missing (a bad idea, in general, I'll fix this).
    2. Correlation.
      Requires two time series to be entered. Returns a simple linear correlation calculated for all months separately or a seasonal average. Lags can be specified in months.
    3. Autocorrelation.
      Plots the correlation at ..,-5,-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4,5... lags of a time series with itself. Plot will be symmetric excluding end effects. The 1/e decorrelation time (in months) is printed assuming it exists.
    4. Cross correlation
      Plots the correlation at ..,-5,-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4,5... lags of a time series with another.
  5. Time Averaging
    Values are calculated for each month separately or the seasonal value is computed first (one value/year). Enter season from first month to last
