WASHINGTON--Ira Magaziner, senior advisor to the President for Policy Development, will be the keynote speaker at Update West 97, an annual conference on export controls sponsored by the Commerce Department s Bureau of Export Administration in San Francisco February 10 and 11.

Magaziner will discuss his work as the chair of a joint National Economic/National Security Council Task Force which since late 1995 has been focusing on issues such as electronic commerce, trade barriers, and export controls. Mr. Magaziner will address those issues in his remarks. Update West is an annual conference on export controls sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce s Bureau of Export Administration.

The conference will provide over 400 business leaders, exporters and government officials will participate in the two days of seminars and meetings with a first opportunity to discuss the recent major overhaul of the Export Administration Regulations including the easing of restrictions on the export of computer related products, and improved licensing processes.

Regulatory changes range from the adoption of plain English to the creation of a universal license application for most restricted commodities. Other important changes in export regulations include the transfer of license jurisdiction from the State Department to the Commerce Department for commercial aircraft engines, satellites and encryption products.

Topics will include recent Bureau actions, including the complete overhaul of the Export Administration Regulations, eased restrictions on computers and related products, and improved licensing processes for exporters.

Mr. Magaziner's speech is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11. A press availability will follow immediately. Press credentials will be required.

For schedule information and to obtain press credentials please call either the BXA Washington Public Affairs office or -- after February 6, 1997 -- Sue Hofer at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco -- 415/772-5000.
