The overarching goal of the Native Youth HIV/AIDS Health Promotion and Education Media Program is to reduce the transmission and infection rate of HIV among American Indian, Alaska Native, and Hawaiian youth. The project provides educational information and skill-based instruction on methods of HIV prevention, skills for youth media production/media literacy, and tools for youth leadership development, to Native youth ages 14-19, in the San Francisco Bay area. The project supports health education activities to reduce high risk behaviors; promote healthy behaviors and increased knowledge about safe choices; increase the skills of the participants to enable them to take ownership of HIV as a disease that impacts Native peoples; and foster action, using media as a tool, to prevent the further spread of HIV and related diseases. Among the specific activities are an intervention curriculum which focuses on HIV prevention education, media literacy, media production, and a campaign presentation including public speaking and leadership development; dissemination of the materials developed by the participants, at community and national venues; and development of culturally meaningfully HIV prevention social marketing campaigns and peer-based education materials geared to the target population. As part of the social marketing campaign, participants will develop an “HIV 101 for San Francisco Bay Area Youth” - HIV fact sheets targeting Native youth, and other medial materials such as posters, public service announcements, billboards, and a video.
