WASHINGTON - Commerce Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement F. Amanda DeBusk today announced a $20,000 civil penalty imposed on U-Freight, Inc., a freight forwarder in South San Francisco, CA., to settle allegations that the company arranged for a shipment of computers to the People’s Republic of China, in violation of a condition on the Commerce export license.
The Department alleged that in September 1993, U-Freight arranged for a shipment of Sun Microsystems computers to the People’s Republic of China when it knew or had reason to know that the shipment was contrary to a condition on the validated export license. While neither admitting nor denying the allegations, U-Freight, Inc. agreed to pay the penalty; a portion of which, $10,000, was suspended.
The Department of Commerce, through its Bureau of Export Administration, administers and enforces export controls for reasons of National Security, Foreign Policy, Nonproliferation and Short Supply. BXA’s Office of Export Enforcement Washington Field Office investigated this case. Criminal penalties, as well as administrative sanctions, can be imposed for violations of the Regulations.
In April of 2002 the Bureau of Export Administration (BXA) changed its name to the Bureau of Industry and Security(BIS). For historical purposes we have not changed the references to BXA in the legacy documents found in the Archived Press and Public Information.
