The South Carolina State University (SCSU) Family Life Center operates Project FLAVA with the goal of positively impacting the academic and personal development of youth who are at-risk for violence and other abusive behaviors. Project FLAVA uses a curriculum designed to increase its academic, personal, cultural, recreational, career development, and family bonding capacity. The project serves 55 participants from the Sprinkle Community who are identified through the Mellichamp Elementary School and Robert E. Howard Middle School. During the academic year, activities are conducted in school and after school Monday through Thursday and one Saturday per month. Creative problem solving and decision making skills are stressed to assist youth in developing impulse control and using peaceful conflict resolution methods. Participants visit business sites and receive instruction on job readiness skills. Family bonding activities are hosted, such as a series of seminars and workshop for parent involvement, including mother/caregiver daughter night, father/son/caregiver night, and academic seminars. Other activities include sports and recreational sessions, arts and crafts, field trips to museums, and theatrical performances. A four-week summer program is conducted each year and it further enhances skills in math, science, reading/English, and technology. Recreational activities including tennis, swimming, golf, bowling, and other intramural sports take place as part of the summer program. SCSU students are recruited and trained as mentors and tutors. |
