Training Materials for Dock and Pier Management

As follow up to the two national dock and pier management workshops, the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) and the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM) have developed a guidance workbook and accompanying model PowerPoint presentations to assist regional and local groups sponsor their own Dock Management Workshops.

The training materials provide coastal decision makers with information, skills and tools to evaluate and manage the environmental, visual, navigational, and public access impacts associated with the construction and maintenance of small docks and piers. The workbook serves as a useful reference document the audience can take away from the workshop and use in implementing management measures related to small docks.

While national in scope, the presentations are designed so that they can be modified to meet the needs and interests of local audiences by incorporating local graphics, case studies, and summaries of state or municipal management/regulatory programs. One, several, or all of the modules could be presented depending on the audience and needs of the workshop. If more then one presentation is given at a time, we recommend identifying several local experts to give each presentation rather than having one presenter present all the materials.
