Commerce Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement, Michael Garcia, today announced that Pars Company, Inc., of Cary, North Carolina pleaded guilty to exporting two STX Gas Monitors to the United Arab Emirates and transhipping the monitors to Iran without the required Commerce Department license, in violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The gas monitors are controlled by the Department of Commerce because of their use in the development or production of chemical and biological weapons.
The three-year investigation revealed that from September 1997 through September 1998, Pars Company, Inc. had solicited several U.S. manufacturers for exporting commodities to Iran.
As part of the plea agreement Pars Company, Inc. also paid a $10,000 criminal fine.
Assistant Secretary Garcia commended the effort of David Martin of the Washington Area Field Office, for his work during this investigation.
In April of 2002 the Bureau of Export Administration (BXA) changed its name to the Bureau of Industry and Security(BIS). For historical purposes we have not changed the references to BXA in the legacy documents found in the Archived Press and Public Information.
