Highlights of Last IAB Meeting John Clark 2:122:15PM Federal/State Issues Alert Martha Dorris 2:152:23PM To date, five issue alerts have been published on Accessibility, Internet taxation, Internet Privacy, Digital Signatures and Personal Use Government Equipment. The most recent issues alert deal with personal use of government equipment. With the line between home and work merging, many governments are easing the restrictions on personal use of equipment (e.g. telephones, copiers, and computers) to boost morale and productivity. Technology is cheap, restrictive policies cost more in lost time and productivity than they save. Employees should be encouraged to use the latest technology and build technical skills. What suggestions does the board have for future topics? IAB Report on The Many Silver Linings John Clark 2:232:30PM of the Y2K Challenges This report was compiled by surveying various program managers in Federal, International, State and local governments and asking them to submit their experiences and lesson learned in meeting the Year 2000 challenge. The goal was to highlight the intangible benefits derived from the massive amount of money and resources expended to meet the Y2K challenge. A total of 21 case studies were submitted, 2 from International governments, 11 from the State and local government perspectives and 8 from the Federal level. Each case study provides a point of contact for obtaining further information that may help you in your own efforts. Many of these case studies reaffirm what we already suspected that there were many silver linings experienced by all levels of government in addressing the Y2K challenge, such as: comprehensive and complete IT inventories (hardware/software), established new relationships across organizations, actually involved top level management, modernized IT infrastructures, improved program management, increased intergovernmental partnerships, better defined project metrics, highlighted data exchanges, detailed business continuity plans, and elevated the position of the CIO/IT manager. Next IAB Product Frank McDonough 2:302:50PM Frank leads a brainstorming session with the IAB members to identify topics for future IAB products or reports. The following topics from previous IAB teleconferences in the past 18 months are provided help to kick off the brainstorming session: ISD Follow-up Report, Cooperation between local governments in managing IT, Vulnerability of IT infrastructure to terrorism, Collaborative human resource applications, Project Management for IT initiatives, Continuity of government services, Increasing trust in government, Single portals to government, and Examples of partnerships between governments.
