 Number, Race, and Sex of Perpetrators 

The number of persons known to be involved in the 1,578 robberies, burglaries, and larcenies was 1,907. The following table shows a breakdown of the 1,907 persons who have been identified by race and sex. In a small number of cases, the use of full disguise makes determination of race and sex impossible.

Investigation to date has resulted in the identification of 793 (42 percent) of the 1,907 persons known to be involved. Of these 793 identified persons, 349 (44 percent) were determined to be users of narcotics, and 164 (21 percent) were found to have been previously convicted in either federal or state court for bank robbery, bank burglary, or bank larceny.

3 "Weapon Threatened" includes those cases where a weapon was threatened or implied either orally or in a demand note but not actually observed. 

Injuries, Deaths, and Hostages Taken   

Acts of violence were committed during 54 (3.4 percent) of the 1,578 robberies, burglaries, and larcenies which occurred during this three-month period. These acts included 9 instances involving the discharge of firearms, 38 instances involving assaults, and 6 instances of hostage situations. (One or more acts of violence may occur during an incident.) These acts of violence resulted in 31 injuries, 3 deaths, and 17 persons being taken hostage.
