Shark Longline Survey

In the above photo, the Oregon II is standing off from a hi-flyer that marks one end of the longline deployed off the south coast of Cuba during the 1998 Shark Survey. The Oregon II conducts Shark Longlining in the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, and Caribbean Sea along the coasts of the United States, Mexico, and Cuba. Sharks are caught, measured, tagged, and released in order to assess the abundance, distribution, and migrational patterns of coastal sharks, and to examine the distribution with regard to oceanographic features. Members of the respective fisheries institutes in Mexico and Cuba participate in this cooperative shark longline project.
