NOAA Ship DAVID STARR JORDAN

Laboratory Spaces

The DAVID STARR JORDAN is equipped with an electronics shop, a machine shop, and a bosun's shop. Each shop is supported with qualified personnel and is able to complete repairs to, and on occasion modify, scientific sampling equipment at sea. This capability has enabled adapting specialized equipment and fabricating damage parts to ensure project completion. In addition to support shops, the DAVID STARR JORDAN has a total of six working spaces for scientific use, four laboratories, the constant temperature room and the Science Information Center (SIC). Any anticipated needs should be discussed with the Command prior to a cruise. Select one of the links below for a description of each space.

Chemical Lab

Chemical LabThe Chemical Lab (also referred to as the Chem Lab) is approximately 340 sq. feet and is located on the starboard side just forward of the Hydro Lab on the main deck level with direct access to the Dry Specimen and Seawater Labs. This lab is generally used for various analytical analyses, general lab work, and rosette CTD control. Direct TSG feed, winch readout and SCS, Navtrek, and ADCP video output are also available. A supercool freezer (-80ºC) is also located in this space. The internal dimensions are 27 in. wide, by 19 in. deep, by 23 in. high.

Other features include: network hook-up capabilities, limited storage space for scientific supplies, digital winch readouts for all winches (except the Choker Winch), CTD deck unit, freezer for scientific samples, fume hood, 2 deep sinks, fresh and salt water supply, counter top, non- regulated and regulated electrical power, hands free intercom to the Pilot House and each winch control booth, telephone, fluorescent lighting

Constant Temperature Room

The Constant Temperature Room is 76 sq. ft. and is located just forward of and accessed only through the Seawater Lab. As the name implies, the temperature of this space is highly regulated. The temperature is normally maintained at 68 to 70 ºF. It is good for the use of temperature or light sensitive equipment/processes. Approximately 130 cu. ft. of open rack storage is available on the forward bulkhead.

Other features include: Autosalinometer, regulated electrical power, fluorescent lighting

Dry Speciman Lab

The Dry Speciman Lab is a 72 sq. ft. lab located on the port side, adjacent to the Chemical and Hydro Labs. It is a small general purpose lab with a limited amount of floor, wooden counter top, and cabinet/drawer space. A walk-in freezer is located adjacent to the Dry Specimen Lab. The internal dimensions are 10.5 ft. wide, by 3.6 ft. deep, by 6.2 ft. high. The temperature is normally maintained at -5 to 5 ºF. This freezer is normally used by the stewards department, but can be made partially or wholly available for project use upon request.

Other features include: 2 large sinks, fresh and salt water supply, non- regulated and regulated electrical power, fluorescent lighting

Hydro Lab

The Hydro Lab is a 198 sq. ft. space and is the aft-most lab on the starboard side, with direct access to the aft deck and to the Chemical Lab. This lab is the primary staging area for outside work and is also used for minor sample processing work. Some foul weather gear is stored here during cruises. Approximately 80 cu. ft. of open rack storage is available on the inboard bulkhead.

Other features include: anemometer, gyro heading repeater, sink with fresh and uncontaminated sea water supply, fume hood, a small desk, limited counter top and drawer/cabinet space, cork bulletin board and dry erasable board, non- regulated and regulated electrical power, fluorescent lighting

Science Information Center Lab

SICThe Science Information Center (SIC) is approximately 190 sq. ft. of air-conditioned space located on the 02 Level, just aft of the bridge on the starboard side. The Trimble P-Code GPS, gyro repeater, receiver, monitor/VCR for the Simrad EQ-50 and Wesmar scanning sonar, RM Young and RDI Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) are located in this space. Equipment rack and table top space are available for mounting gear and planning operations. The shipboard Scientific Computer System (SCS), the Primary and Backup Domain Controllers, HP Laser Printer and copying machine are also located in this space. The SIC supports networked PC's and printers and will accommodate additional scientific PC's.

Other features include: air conditioning, network hook-up capabilities, regulated power, telephone, computer work station, fluorescent lighting

Seawater Lab

The Seawater Lab is a 182 sq. foot lab located just forward of the Main Lab. This space is a good multi-use lab with alot of wooden counter space and under counter storage. An over/under freezer/refrigerator is available for sample or chemical storage. The freezer portion has internal dimensions of 30 in. wide, by 18 in. deep, by 16 in. high. The temperature is maintained at 0 to 2 ºF. The refrigerator portion has internal dimensions of 32 in. wide, by 21 in. deep, by 24 in. high. The temperature is maintained at approximately 40 ºF.

Other features include: sink, fresh and salt water supply, non- regulated and regulated electrical power, fluorescent lighting
