The performance of six popular Monte Carlo and Sn transport codes is compared for a simple spherical model of the Bigten critical assembly. These tests stress the importance of the unresolved resonance region of U-238. Agreement is generally good, but several interesting differences and data effects are observed. This study addresses, for the first time, the total prompt energy release and its components for the fission of U-235, U-238, and Pu-239 as a function of the kinetic energy of the neutron inducing the fission. The components are extracted from experimental measurements, where they exist, together with model-dependent calculation, interpolation, and extrapolation. While the components display clear dependencies upon the incident neutron energy, their sums display only weak, yet definite, energy dependencies. Also addressed is the total prompt energy deposition in fission for the same three systems. Results are presented in equation form. New measurements are recommended as a consequence of this study. The article itself can be obtained from Nature's web site . We provide here postscript files of the seven figures that appear in the article in the form of a gzipped tar file figs-nature.tar.gz . The figures are in the form originally submitted to Nature; the published versions differ slightly from the files provided here. When printed the files we provide here will be the size of a full page. It should be observed that to unzip and unpack this file about 125 Mb of file space is needed, since some of the individual figure files are up to 23 Mb in size. The three first figures are black-and-white, the remaining five figures color. However, for those who desire bw versions it is trivial to convert the color figures to bw. In the very beginning of each file there is a line " 1 /icol exch def". If this is changed to " 0 /icol exch def" the figure will be optimized for printing on a black-and-white printer. Although the color figures will print as are on a black-and-white printer the result will be very poor unless this change is instituted. It is of course necessary that the editor and computer system can handle 23 Mb file sizes.

The use of radionuclides in medical and industrial applications is steadily increasing, but the capacity to produce these materials in the US is insufficient. One good possibility for future production of radionuclides is the use of high-power accelerators, such as the one studied for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) project. This paper by K. A. Van Riper, S. G. Mashnik, and W. B. Wilson, "Study of Isotope Production in High Power Accelerators," reports on calculations of production rates of 22 useful radionuclides at various locations in the APT target-blanket region and at various accelerator beam energies. The APT target/blanket assembly provides a radiation environment of neutrons and protons of all energies below that of the incident proton beam. The parasitic application of this environment in the production of radioisotopes of medical and industrial applications has been proposed and candidate radioisotopes listed. In the present work we have simulated the neutron and proton flux spectra at two possible blanket irradiation sites, selected two candidate medical radioisotopes for study, modeled cross sections for target materials leading to their production, and calculated their production rates during APT operation using the fluxes and cross sections obtained. This study illustrates a procedure for isotope production calculations and compares results of cross-section modeling codes available for use in APT simulations. Our group uses LaTeX for most of our technical publications. Therefore, we were interested in moving to the new LaTeX2e when it became available. We are now using the teTeX implementation. When we started using the new LaTeX2e system, we had to write new "class" packages for our letters and memos. The work that we did might be a good staring point for others.
