HEALTH IMPACT OF OBESITY

  • More than 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight.3
  • People who are overweight are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, high levels of blood fats, and LDL cholesterol (“a fatlike substance”) -- all risk factors for heart disease and stroke.3
  • American Indian or Alaska Native adults (26.2%) were as likely as Asian adults (29.0%) and black adults (24.4%), but less likely than white adults (33.1%), to engage in regular leisure-time physical activity.2
