Description The purpose of this proposal is to conduct a planning workshop for an experimental oil spill in pack ice offshore Canada.  Specifically this work will:
  1. Prepare a background information document for the proposed workshop;
     
  2. Plan the workshop;
     
  3. Facilitate the workshop; and,
     
  4. Write a report on the results of the workshop.
Progress The workshop was successfully conducted November 1-2, 2005 at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Halifax, Nova Scotia. 30 scientists from nine countries participated in the workshop. A Steering Committee has been formed to proceed with planning of the experimental oil spill. MMS and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada are work to conduct this research project under the auspices of the International Polar Year.

Planning is continuing to plan an experimental spill offshore Eastern Canada or the Canadian Beaufort Sea in 2007 or 2008.  This project is complete.
