Project Number 312
Date of Summary March 31, 2000
Subject Laboratory Testing to Determine In Situ Burning Parameters for Six Additional U.S. OCS Crude Oil
Performing Activity SL Ross Environmental Research Ltd.
Principal Investigator Mr. James McCourt and Ian Buist
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Completion March 2000
Description 6 additional oils from OCS facilities are being analyzed to determine if their suitability of spill response by in situ burn methods. Data on evaporation, emulsion formation, ignitability, burn rate, oil removal efficiency, and the potential for emulsion breakers to extend the window of burn opportunity will be gathered.
Progress MMS Regions selected 6 oils that are being tested at the SL Ross laboratory in Ottawa, Canada for in situ burn characteristics.  Several samples were from pipelines. A final report was generated and a paper of the results was presented at the Arctic and Marine Oil spill Program in Vancouver, Canada in June, 2000. Some of the Gulf of Mexico oils burned but the California oils did not.
