Date of Summary June 15, 2001
Subject Homopolar Welding of Offshore Pipelines
Performing Activity University of Texas
Principal Investigator William F. Weldon
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Complete
Description This is a Joint Industry Project (JIP). The purpose of this project was to demonstrate the viability of Homopolar Welding (HPW) in large pipelines.
Progress The objectives of the research program developed through course of the year and included improving toughness of 12-inch pipe welds, assessment of fatigue properties, and API acceptance. The research effort completed eighteen 3-inch welds, fourteen 12-inch welds, repairs to the 10 MJ homopolar generator, and modifications to the 12-inch welding fixture. The fatigue study was completed during the spring of 1998 with the final report submitted to the sponsors on June 4, 1998. No fatigue research is included in the final since no additional fatigue research was done in the HPWAP. The project is complete.
