Project Number 106
Date of Summary September 30, 1990
Subject Development of Inspection and Repair Programs for Fixed Offshore Platforms
Performing Activity PMB Systems Engineering, Inc.
Principal Investigator Mr. David Stewart
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Complete
Description This was a Joint Industry Project (JIP), to develop a methodology to assess the integrity of existing steel offshore platforms that are reaching the latter part of their intended lives. Many of these platforms can be used for economical extended service provided they are fully evaluated for the effects of damage sustained during their service lives. This evaluation included assessments of damage to serviceability and ultimate strength of the structures and evaluation of repair measures that preserve essential safety and economic objectives. The approach focused on environmental loadings, operational loadings and requirements, structural and foundation behavior and limit state behavior of the overall platform system. This information was integrated to form an overall characterization of the methodology and define safety and cost effective repair and maintenance strategies where required. The result of this program was a fully documented procedure that presents engineering technology to address the performance of existing platforms. It identified the potential for continued platform service and the most appropriate types of repair measures.
