Project Number 46
Date of Summary September 30, 1983
Subject Behavior of Piles and Pile Groups in Cohesionless Soils
Performing Activity Texas A&M Research Foundation
Principal Investigator Dr. Harry M. Coyle
Contracting Agency Federal Highway Administration
Estimated Completion Complete
Description To develop an improved correlation between measured soil properties and maximum load transfer in single piles and to improve the understanding of load transfer mechanisms in single piles and pile groups in cohesionless soils. This is a companion study to Project No. 45. The purpose of this study is to consider the geotechnical problems associated with the foundation supports for tension-leg platforms.
Progress Complete. A literature search was completed and ten case histories of pile tests in cohesionless soils were identified to use in this study. However, only one of these is fully instrumented. It was found that very little soil information was available from the test to have a basis for a statistical analysis. Different load transfer models were used to analyze the data collected from the literature.
