Project Number 15
Date of Summary March 31, 1982
Subject Hardhat Communicator
Performing Activity Harry Diamond Laboratories
Principal Investigator Mr. R. F. Shoemaker
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion Complete
Description The objective was the assessment of technology and the evaluation of promising electrical and physical configurations for personal RF communication systems mounted in safety helmets.
Progress Complete. Evaluations were made on the four systems by conducting tests offshore. Results indicate that a simple modification of a commercial low-power frequency modulated system operating in the 49-MHz public service band could be used to considerable advantage. Penetration through platform structures was excellent and communication was possible to all points on the platform from within an enclosed steel compressor room where noise levels were as high as 97 DBA.
