Career Experience That Means Something More

Today's IRS is where America's growth gains strength... where collected taxes support our nation's vital programs including Homeland Security. America's defense… Social Security… parklands and forests… matching funds for roads and bridges, building libraries, opening museums, delivering work training programs, enhancing schools...

As the largest accounting firm in the United States, the IRS offers invaluable career opportunities in the world of finance for students like you, and for professionals of all levels. Plus, we make sure you have time for all of your life activities outside of work, because we believe the more fulfilled you are in your personal life, the more satisfied you'll be in your professional life.

Who Are We Looking for?
If you've earned your bachelor's degree and have a solid GPA, you may pursue non-clerical or administrative positions, such as Tax Compliance Officer, Revenue Officer and Tax Specialist.

And, if you're interested in a specialized position — Revenue Agent, Criminal Investigation Special Agent, you must have a college degree and a certain number of semester hours of accounting.

Other opportunities are available in:
  • Business and Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Information Technology
  • Law Enforcement
  • Legal
  • Research
  • Seasonal and Temporary Positions
  • Tax Law

Clerical Jobs
Typical positions you may qualify for include clerical and para-professional positions in one of our larger field offices and in our major Service Center Campus locations. If you have a high school diploma or GED, you might be interested in one of our Seasonal or Temporary positions. Depending on your education and experience, these include Clerk, Data Transcriber, Tax Examiner and Contact Representative.

Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)
We offer a Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) in the area of Criminal Investigation. SCEP is a federal program that identifies, recruits and trains high-potential college students for a direct career path to a Special Agent position, combining school coursework with on-the-job training.

Internships
Our Large and Mid-Size Business Division (LMSB) conducts tax examination of corporations with assets greater than $10 million. LMSB conducts a Summer Intern program for college students currently enrolled in a master's program with a concentration in accounting. You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and meet other requirements to qualify for employment.

Personal Benefits
Here's just a sampling of the life style advantages you'll receive:

  • Standard 40-Hour Work Weeks
  • Alternative Work Schedules — in some cases, you can work four 10-hour days per week, and get the fifth day off. Or, you could work eight 9-hour days and one 8-hour day — and use the 10th day as your day off!

Application Requirements
Most of our positions have specific educational and skill requirements. If you would like to apply for several of these opportunities, you must complete separate forms for each one. For all our jobs, you will need to show proof of US citizenship, successfully pass a fingerprint check and also a tax compliance check of prior years. Most positions also involve an interview, and some require testing and a background check. You can find more details about each position in the job vacancy announcement on USAJOBS.

Meet an IRS Recruiter at a Recruiting Event — Apply Anytime.
As part of the application process, we encourage you to meet with an IRS Recruiter at one of our recruiting events. Since we are always creating new programs and opportunities to assist you, talking with a Recruiter is your best way to stay current on all we have to offer. And, you can apply for one of our career positions at any time; however, we suggest that college seniors apply at the start of the fall semester.

We also suggest that, if you are a high school student, you talk with one of our Recruiters about your plans and ambitions. You'll find out why they built their career at IRS and what skills and background they're looking for when they're at a recruiting event.
