My work spans a range of scientific issues from the global (such
as the effects
of climate change on marine ecosystems) to the local (such as coastal
eutrophication). In general, I investigate controls on aquatic
ecosystem processes and elemental cycling, particularly with
respect to the role of human activities. I combine a variety of
chemical tools with mathematical models of biogeochemical and
physical processes to elucidate controls on elemental cycling and
the production, transport and fate of trace and toxic elements in
aquatic systems.
I am currently working to develop models of global ocean
biogeochemical cycling to be incorporated into GFDL's FMS based Modular
Ocean Model version 4 for re-analysis and climate change
simulations. For detailed information on the status of this work,
see the Ocean Biogeochemical
Model Development Team and Earth System

Me looking goofy on TV! - See a Science and
Technology Feature that aired on the January 9, 2004 edition of NJN News with Jorge
Sarmiento and myself describing a project
published in the January 1, 2004 edition of the journal Nature.
Postdoctoral Research Associate - I was previously working with Jorge Sarmiento at the Princeton University Program in Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences developing global models of elemental (C,N,P,Si, Ca-alkalinity, and Fe) export from the surface ocean in the framework of the Modular Ocean Model (MOM) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. The initial effort is to diagnose particle export from restoration of surface distributions and then to develop a prognostic ecosystem model (calibrated against the diagnostic model) to predict the response of ocean ecosystems to climate change.
Postdoctoral Research Associate - I worked with Steve Emerson and Al Devol at the University of Washington School of Oceanography to develop a profiling mooring to monitor water quality in South Puget Sound over long time-scales at high frequency (ORCA project home page).
Doctor of Philosophy - Winter, 1999. University of Washington, Seattle, WA; Oceanography; Thesis: Measured and Modeled Particle Export in Equatorial and Coastal Upwelling Regions. I worked with James W. Murray, on particle cycling and carbon export in the equatorial Pacific with the US and French components of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study and other studies with additional work in the Santa Barbara Channel and at the Hawaii Ocean Time-series. The particle export approach coupled 234Th chemistry to ecological models of marine systems and incorporated a variety of field data on 234Th and biological parameters. In addition to the particle export component, I conducted numerous modeling experiments on the nature of elemental cycling (e.g. C, N, Si, Th) in these regions.
Master of Science - June 1996. University of Washington, Seattle, WA; Oceanography; Thesis: 234Th and particle cycling in the central equatorial Pacific
Bachelor of Science - June 1993. The University of California at San Diego Major: Chemistry; Minor: Writing
