Can businesses like mine actually use the Economic Census? Yes! Here are some examples.

You Can Help Your Clients with the 2007 Economic Census

In December, millions of businesses across America received a 2007 Economic Census form. The forms ask for each establishment's physical location, employment, payroll, sales by product line, and, in some cases, other specialized inquiries. The forms were due to be returned by February 12, 2008.

Since you may have some of these figures, your clients may ask for your assistance in completing their forms.

Can I get my clients' forms send directly to my office?

The 2007 Economic Census forms were mailed December 17 to each company's address of record.

Why did some of my clients get many forms?

Businesses with more than one location received a separate form for each location.

What if my client doesn't have book figures for some of these questions?

Where book figures are not available, estimates are acceptable.

How do I file my clients' reports electronically?

Businesses can download special software with an spreadsheet-style look and feel, and return their data in a highly secure environment. See www.census.gov/econhelp for more information.

How can a business get assistance if they have questions about filling out the forms?

Businesses can reach a Census Bureau representative at our toll-free "help line" (1-800-233-6136), 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday excluding holidays.

An Internet-based "Business Help Site" (www.census.gov/econhelp) answers many questions and provides business services.

Businesses can send e-mail messages through a secure area of the Business Help site (www.census.gov/econhelp/securemail)

What is the penalty for not responding?

The census law (Title 13, United States Code, Section 224), coupled with the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 (Title 18, Section 3561), provides for penalties of up to $5,000 for failure to report, and $10,000 for intentionally providing false information.

What should I do if my client does not receive an Economic Census form?

Nothing. To reduce the burden on American businesses, the Census Bureau does not send Economic Census forms to most very small firms. At companies with more than one location, all forms are sent to the company headquarters; so most staff never see a census form.

A few industries are not covered by the Economic Census — agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting; schools and colleges; and labor, political, and religious organizations.

How do businesses get picked for the Census?

Economic Census forms are sent to all but the smallest businesses in every industry and geographic area of the U.S. Most businesses with five or more paid employees, and a sample of smaller ones, will receive a census form.

Where can I see more questions and answers?

At the Business Help Site.
