Welcome to Fort Hunt Park. The George Washington Memorial Parkway manages this popular picnic area which has a variety of shelters and areas available for reservation. Located just 11 miles south of Washington, D. C., not far from George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, the park's proximity to the Nation's Capital influenced its history from the colonial era to the present. This site has been part of George Washingtons farm, a Spanish-American War coastal fortification, and the setting for top-secret WWII military intelligence operations. Area A
This area features a large pavilion with picnic tables that can seat up to 350 people, open field space, a softball field, and 2 volleyball courts. Restrooms adjoin the pavilion. Other amenities exclusive to Area A include: Amplified music is allowed at Area A, electricity (20 AMPS) is available, and a stage and fireplace are located in the pavilion. There is also a small playground, open to the public, near the pavilion. Please note available parking is limited to 155 parking spaces, there is no overflow parking. Large picnics must plan carpooling, busing, or shuttles; parking on the grass is prohibited at Fort Hunt Park.
*********** Area A - Sunday Evenings Advisory***********
Labor Day - Memorial Day: Fort Hunt sponsors a Sunday evening 7:00PM summer concert series at Area A for the general public and will need the use of the pavilion after your permit expires at 6:00PM. Vacating the pavilion at 6:00PM is a condition of your permit, should you reserve Area A on a Sunday during the summer.

Area B
This area features an adequate shelter with picnic tables that can seat up to 250 people, open field space, a softball field, and restrooms nearby. Available parking is 144 parking spaces. Amplified music is prohibited in this area.

Area C-1
There is no shelter on this site.This area features picnic tables in a rustic wooded area and a nearby open field (seats 100 people). Public restrooms are available across the street in Area E. Available parking is limited to approximately 45 parking spaces. Amplified music is prohibited in this area.

Area C-2
This area features an adequate shelter with picnic tables that can seat up to 100 people. Open field space is nearby, public restrooms are available across the street in Area E. Available parking is limited to approximately 45 parking spaces. Amplified music is prohibited in this area.

Area C-3
There is no shelter on this site.This area features picnic tables in a rustic wooded area and a nearby open field (seats 100 people). Public restrooms are available across the street in Area E. Available parking is limited to approximately 45 parking spaces. Amplified music is prohibited in this area

Area D
This area features an adequate shelter with picnic tables that can seat up to 100 people, a softball field, and an open field. Please note this area has only Port-A-Let restrooms. Public restrooms are within walking distance, in Area E. This site has only 32 parking spaces. Arrangements should be made to carpool.

Area E
Reservations are not required; there is no fee for this area. Without a reservation, please note that there is no permit for beer and wine; alcohol is prohibited in this area. The area features limited seating in an open field and is typically occupied by up to 4 small family groups on a first come first serve basis. There is no shelter, amplified music is prohibited. Public

Alerts and Important Information

  • Your permit is valid from 10am-6pm only
  • Your confirmation letter will serve as your permit; you must bring a copy with you on the day of your event.
  • Acceptance of the permit transmitted as a confirmation letter signifies your understanding, acceptance, and abidance of the policies set forth by the National Park Service and that you agree to inform attendees and ensure their compliance.
  • Your permit allows for a maximum number of guests per area

    Area D - 125 People
  • Amplified Music is only allowed in Area A.
  • Bring your own grills. Ash disposal cans are provided.
  • Beer and wine (no hard liquors) are allowed within your area with your permit. If alcohol is distributed by a caterer or beer distributor, they must have a valid license from the state ABC board.
  • Groups may reserve only one area at Fort Hunt Park per day.
  • Vehicles must be parked in designated areas only; parking or driving on grass areas is prohibited.
  • The exchange of money on park property is strictly prohibited, including, but not limited to, vending, raffles, fundraising, and collection of fees. Selling T-shirts, raffle tickets, and entrance tickets are examples of prohibited collection of money.
  • Park water may not be used for recreation use or dunk tanks.
  • Decorations are allowed with restrictions. Please remove and dispose of any remnants such as banners, signs, string, tape, or balloon pieces. No objects may be attached to trees. Directional signs shall not be posted along the parkway.
  • NATIONAL PARK SERVICE RANGER (202) 439-7325 will be available from 8AM - 6PM during your event. Please call for concerns or assistance, they will respond as soon as possible.
  • Picnic tables shall not be moved from one area to another.
  • You must leave the area in a clean condition; you are responsible for associated costs due to willful damage or excessive litter.
  • You and your guests are responsible for your actions at the park and will hold the United States government harmless form any claim or liability resulting from acts of negligence or willful misconduct. With your alcohol permit, you are responsible for enforcement of all state and local alcoholic beverage regulations.
  • A National Park Service representative will monitor your event for compliance, failure to comply with these policies may result in the revocation of your permit and/or the inability to obtain future permits.

Fort Hunt Park is convenient to the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. Located in northern Virginia, Fort Hunt Park is along the George Washington Memorial Parkway, just 5 miles south of Old Town Alexandria. The exit from the parkway is clearly marked FORT HUNT PARK. Please note that the parkway is also variously referred to as the Mt. Vernon Highway, and, in Alexandria, as Washington Street.
