Indian Point

On September 20, 2005, the NRC initiated a special inspection into leakage from the spent fuel pool area at the Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant. The leakage, which was discovered in early September at the Buchanan, NY facility, is minimal and does not pose any immediate health or safety concerns for members of the public or plant workers. The NRC has received questions and concerns about the leak. This Web page provides information to the public on the status of the leak and the NRC's response. New information will be added to this web page, periodically.

The Indian Point Energy Center is located 24 miles north of New York City on about 239 acres of land on the east bank of the Hudson River in upper Westchester County, New York. There are three reactors at the site, Indian Point units 1, 2 and 3. Unit 1 was permanently shut down in 1974. Units 2 and 3 are still in operation. The operating license for Unit 2 was issued in September 1973 and expires in September 2013. The operating license for Unit 3 was issued in December 1975 and expires in December 2015. Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., a subsidiary of Entergy, operates the facility.
