Summer Workshop on Biomarkers of Cancer Risk Reduction

FDA, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) are sponsoring a 2-day workshop on July 12 and 13, 2005, on "Use and Misuse of Biomarkers as Indicators of Cancer Risk Reduction Following Dietary Manipulation." The workshop will be held at the Lister Hill Auditorium on the NIH Campus in Bethesda, Maryland.

This workshop will assist both researchers and regulators to consider the application of biomarkers and surrogate endpoints in evaluating nutrition in cancer-risk reduction.

The objectives of the workshop include: 1) review and discuss criteria for surrogate endpoints for cancer risk; 2) identify biomarkers that are influenced by diet and their relationship to cancer risk and tumor behavior; and 3) explore emerging biomarkers for their relevance to nutrition and cancer prevention.

A final report of the workshop's discussions and conclusions will be published in a peer reviewed journal.

More information about the workshop and registration is available at www.scgcorp.com/biomarkers2005.
