NOAA Ship McARTHUR II

Visiting scientists aboard the McARTHUR II make detailed observations of marine mammal and bird activity as well as conduct a wide range of operations including: Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) casts, sound velocity profiling, acoustic surveys, scuba diving, and plankton tows using several types of nets.

In the 2003 field season McARTHUR II will be conducting work in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS). The last part of the field season the McARTHUR II will working with scientists from the Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California. The ship and crew will be participating in the Stenella Abundance Research Project STAR a multi-year study designed to assess the status of dolphin stocks which have been taken as incidental catch by the yellowfin tuna purse-seine fishery in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
