This webpage, "Checklists of the Biota of Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park ," is simply an alphabetical list of the scientific names of species recorded from the park. Each name is linked (click on the scientific name) to its individual taxonomic Family. Within the Family, if a species is illustrated click on the thumbnail image to link to the large photograph page..

There are also indexes to both Hawaiian and English common names where there are such names. Names in these indexes are linked to the Family pages (click on the name). Macrons are not included over the Hawaiianan names since their transmission with less robust web alphabets becomes garbled with different internet browsers.

At first glance, driving along Highway 19 near Honokohau Harbor, the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park looks little more than a flat lava flow with alien grasses and shrubs. But check it out. It has some of the nicest shoreline along the Kona Coast, and has a sample of the finest old Hawaiian fishponds to be found anywhere. The middle pond, Aimakapa, is also a very accessible birding hot spot in Hawaii. Aimakapa is an important wetland and an important migrant trap where many unusual and unexpected birds have turned up. The ocean and reef here are an important new Marine Area Reserve. Green sea turtles regualrly haul in to bask here.

This web page was developed from the National Park Service new Inventory and Monitoring website--a regularly updated intranet site as yet not generally available to the public. The data presented are from these NPSpecies reports on various biota dated April 2004.

Natural Resources in Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park Species Lists:

This biota site is a work in progress. More illustrations will be added. Eventually it will be replaced by the National Park Service's Inventory and Monitoring website with live links to bibliographic sources for the records, and in some cases species distribution maps.

The NPS Inventorying and Monitoring site is a work in progress at this time. It is expected to be on line to the public in a couple more years.
