Health Requirements for Moving Animals Into & Within Colorado

 

  1. All livestock imports are to meet Colorado import and Federal interstate health requirements.
  2. Unless otherwise specified, all livestock imported into Colorado shall be accompanied by a current Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian 30 days prior to entry into Colorado.
  3. All livestock listed on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection shall comply with vaccination, testing and Colorado animal identification requirements.
  4. No animal affected with or having clinical signs of any infectious or contagious disease shall be imported into Colorado except as allowed by a permit issued by the Colorado State Veterinarian's office.
  5. No animal originating from a quarantined herd or area shall be shipped or in any manner transported into the State of Colorado.
  6. Entry Permits are required on the following types of livestock imports:  
    • All Mexican-origin cattle
    • All Non-Official Calfhood Vaccinated (non-OCV) female cattle
    • All rodeo cattle
    • All non-virgin breeding bulls
    • All virgin breeding bulls greater than 2 years old
    • All dairy cattle
    • All Canadian feeder livestock less than 30 months of age Important: Please call Dr. Carl Heckendorf at 303-239-4109 regarding shipments into Colorado of all Canadian breeding cattle
    • All intact breeding cattle, swine, sheep and goats
    • All imports of livestock from states with lower disease status
    • All non-steer imports into approved designated feedlots
    • All bison

  7. Individual identification will be required as import regulations require.
  8. When available, the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) premises identification shall be listed.
  9. When available, RFID devices shall be recorded on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection either electronically or written.
  10. Exceptions for Certificate of Veterinary Inspection:
    • Livestock shipments direct to a federally inspected slaughter plant and accompanied by a Bill of Lading
    • Livestock imports direct to a Colorado licensed livestock market from a farm of origin
    • Such imports shall not include 'trader' livestock
    • Exemptions from Certificate of Veterinary Inspection for import into Colorado to licensed livestock markets are only applicable from states with free regulatory disease statuses
  11. The following shall clear through a port of entry:
    • Interstate commercial livestock transporters as designated by Colorado Department of Transportation or other livestock transporters as required by the State Veterinarian entering the State of Colorado
