MADISON, Wis. -- The final days to apply for assistance for damages caused by the June and July storms and flooding are here.  The deadline is Monday, Sept. 15, at midnight.  Due to the high volume of registrations being received from other disasters throughout the country, Wisconsin applicants are urged to call 1-800-621-3362 or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for those with speech or hearing impairments from 6 to 8 a.m. and 9 to midnight.

As aid to Wisconsin residents increases steadily, emergency managers urge everyone who has not registered for assistance or turned in a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loan application to do so.

"Midnight Monday, September 15, is the deadline for both," said Federal Coordinating Officer Dolph Diemont. of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  "Nearly 40,000 households have already registered, but many of those have not yet turned in their SBA loan applications."

The SBA loan application is an important part of the application process, Diemont explained.  Disaster-aid applicants who receive SBA disaster loan applications should fill them out and turn them in even if they don't want a loan.  Failure to do so can hinder the disaster-assistance process.

"If you qualify for an SBA loan, you don't have to take it," said Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Johnnie Smith. "If you don't qualify for the loan, you may qualify for additional disaster assistance grants from FEMA, the state, or charitable organizations."

To date, more than $93.3 million in state and federal disaster assistance has been approved.  This total represents grants and low-interest loans to individuals and business owners as well as grants to public entities.

Recovery summary as of close of business Sept. 11:

Residents can register or update their information with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-3362 or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for those with speech or hearing impairment. The toll-free lines are open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. CDT.  Residents also can register online 24 hours a day at www.fema.gov until midnight Saturday, Sept.15.

Homeowners, renters and business owners can apply for disaster loans from SBA's secure website at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/.  Information and help with the application process are also available by calling the SBA at 1-800-659-2955 or TTY 1-800-877-8339, by visiting the SBA Web site at www.sba.gov, or by visiting any Disaster Loan Outreach or Business Recovery Center (see Attachment 2 for locations and hours).
