Alternative Dispute Resolution

Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) refers to a variety of dispute resolution methods that serve as alternatives to litigation and formal administrative procedures. ADR methods help people resolve their disputes in creative, productive, and non-adversarial ways.

The ADR Office assists FEMA employees, partners, and those impacted by disasters with preventing, managing, and resolving disputes. ADR is designed to promote satisfying solutions, fair procedures, and constructive professional relationships.

FEMA’s ADR Policy

FEMA’s ADR Office [link to FEMA’s ADR Policy page] seeks to use cooperative and creative problem solving to build productive relationships by resolving disputes promptly, informally, and at the source. The FEMA ADR Office hopes to achieve the tremendous cost benefits, reduced litigation, savings in time and energy, and greater customer satisfaction achieved in other federal government agencies through the use of ADR.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

Alternative Dispute Resolution describes problem-solving processes that promote creative solutions to disputes that are unavailable in traditional dispute resolution forums. FEMA’s ADR Specialist can assist parties in applying the appropriate ADR method to their situation. To learn more about FEMA’s use of ADR methods, visit the FEMA ADR FAQ.

Mediation

Mediation is a form of ADR in which a neutral third party (a “mediator”) helps the disputing parties achieve a resolution that satisfies both of them. FEMA’s ADR Specialist can help parties find a mediator and assist the parties through the mediation process. To learn more about the availability of mediation, visit FEMA’s Mediation FAQ.
