Blocked before the college gate

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

A study says obese girls are half as likely as non-obese girls to go to college.

Robert Crosnoe of the University of Texas found that in data on almost 11,000 teen-agers. His study in the journal Sociology of Education was supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Crosnoe says obese girls are more likely to think worse of themselves – and do things that undermine chances for success, such as skipping school, drinking and taking drugs. He also says obesity isn’t a show-stopper for boys.

He thinks parents of obese girls should help them have faith in themselves.

"What is that thing that can give her that feeling of accomplishment and achievement? And once you figure it out what it is, really support her in doing that and really make sure that she stays connected to it." (10 seconds)
