Keeping up with Steve

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Steve Rice, who's an Iraq war veteran and civilian Defense Department worker, runs five or six miles – 10 when he wants to. And at a pretty good clip:

"The Army 10-miler I think was my last timed event, and that was, an hour, 24 minutes. So, a little longer than I wanted, but that's the longest I'd run since I'd been wounded." (8 seconds)

Rice has one prosthetic leg because of the war injury.

Rice sets goals – as, he says, we all should. For instance, we can start with 30 minutes of moderate physical activity such as brisk walking most if not all days of the week.

Rice spoke at the launch of the Healthier Feds program to help federal workers be active. Non-feds can do the same activities and track their progress through the President's Challenge program, at presidentschallenge.org.
