NOTICE: Madrid Protocol Modes of Payment Change
Effective January 1, 2008

Change in Administrative Instructions for the Application of the Protocol relating
to the Madrid Agreement Concerning International Registration of Marks

Modes of Payment of Fees Payable to the International Bureau

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has amended the Administrative Instructions concerning Modes of Payment of the fees due to the International Bureau. An information notice regarding the new Modes of Payment is posted on WIPO’s web site at: http://www.wipo.int/edocs/madrdocs/en/2007/madrid_2007_20.doc

Bank checks in Swiss francs made payable to International Bureau for international fees will no longer be forwarded by the USPTO to the IB. The revised Administrative Instructions supersede the provisions of the Trademark Manual of Examining Procedure (TMEP) 5th edition, Sections 1902.02(i) and 1903.02, to the extent they are inconsistent with the policies therein. Any checks submitted with international applications of other supporting documents filed on paper will be returned to the sender.

Section 19 of the Administrative Instructions has been amended as follows:

Section 19: Modes of Payment

Fees may be paid to the International Bureau

  1. by debit to a current account with the International Bureau
  2. by payment into the Swiss postal account or to any of the specified bank accounts of the International Bureau,
  3. by credit card, where, in the context of an electronic communication envisaged in Section 11, an electronic interface for online payment has been made available by the International Bureau.
