Below are schedules and course descriptions for the USPTO Section 508 workshops in Fall 2008. These courses are provided free of charge and are open to government employees and contractors associated with Section 508. Please enroll as soon as possible since space is limited. Students who successfully complete a course will receive a CD with additional information and references.

Accessible Web Design

Intended Audience: Anyone who dabbles with websites and web products as well as those who want to be their organization's expert on creating and evaluating compliant web products and websites.
Description: This course is divide in two parts, the first part is a technical introduction to Section 508 web standards. In this section participants will learn the standards and how to create HTML products that are compliant and usable. This course is most effective when both individuals who create web products and those who test them in the same organization attend. The second part of this class takes a more hand-on approach showing participants first hand that there is no need to "dummy down" a web site to make it compliant. Working with real-world web pages, participants will become proficient in the skills needed to design, develop, and test for Section 508 compliance in web pages and systems. All attendees will receive a CD copy of the USPTO Section 508 Reference Guide and other reference materials.

Accessible Software Development

Intended Audience: Software developers and testers and those who want to be their organization's guru on creating and/or evaluating compliant software products.
Description:. This Software Development worshope will be divided in two parts. The first part of the class of the workshop is a technical journey into Section 508 software applications. Participants will become familiar with the Section 508 software standards, learn techniques for developing code to meet the standards, and learn how to evaluate for compliance. The second part of this course takes a more hands-on approach and delves into the soul of Section 508 software compliance. Participants will master the Section 508 software standards with hands on excercises while using established techniques and the Microsoft Active Accessibility Object Inspector to evaluate real-world software applications. This course is most effective when both those who create the software code and those who test it in the same organization attend this course. Participants will learn quickly why Section 508 standards are simply good coding practices. All attendees will receive a CD that includes Microsoft testing software and a copy of the USPTO Section 508 Reference Guide and other reference materials.

Document Accessibility

Intended Audience: Those who create electronic documents or submit them for web publication.
Description: Electronic documents are an integral part of modern business practice. This technically challenging class provides a solid foundation in the concepts of document accessibility. With a focus on document applications that are part of the USPTO workstation baseline, participants will learn which document elements contribute to accessibility. These concepts will be reinforced with hands-on exercises using Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat 8.0.

Prerequisites: Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint. (Adobe Acrobat helpful but not required.)

Accessibility in Emerging Web Technologies

Intended Audience: Web application testers and programmers who create dynamic and highly visual websites.
Description: This advanced class will examine new trends in web technology. For this hands-on course, we will discuss Macromedia Flash, AJAX, and how to use these tools to make web based systems Section 508 compliant. Class time will be split between these two different technologies.
