http://www.wikipedia.org search by city, metropolitan area, or other items of interest
www.city-data.com - city statistics, plus useful forums, both to review and ask questions
http://www.citymayors.com - extensive information on the world's cities, with many "most expensive," "safest," "most polluted," "least stressful" type summaries. Information is a little difficult to find quickly; this is a better site for browsing than for finding quick facts
http://swz.salary.com/costoflivingwizard/layoutscripts/coll_start.asp - compares cost of living in different locations and indicates how far your salary might go. DC suburbs (Fairfax, Potomac, etc.) are not listed - you have to use DC.
http://www.craigslist.org - Local listings (housing, employment, etc.)
www.greatschools.net - good for general facts on schools, parent reviews are inconsistent
