JGI Director Eddy Rubin

Eddy RubinEddy Rubin is the Director of the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) and Genomics Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California.  He received a B.S. in Physics  from the University of California, San Diego, a Ph.D. in Biophysics and M.D. from the University of Rochester.  Following clinical training in Medical Genetics at the University of California, San Francisco, he moved across the bay to join the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to develop computational and biological approaches to the analysis of DNA sequence data.  In 2002, he became the Director of the JGI, transitioning from being a DNA sequence interpreter to a sequence generator.  Under his leadership, the JGI was one of the five leading institutions involved in finishing the sequence of the human genome.  Under his direction, the JGI, representing the world’s largest non-biomedical sequencing center, is focused on sequencing organisms of relevance to bioenergy, carbon cycling, and bioremediation.  Dr. Rubin is internationally recognized for his research on the conversion of genomic data to useful biological information in a variety of fields.  He has authored more than 200 research papers, and the current work in his laboratory includes the development of computational tools for cross-species sequence analysis, genome-wide studies of  human gene regulation, Neanderthal genomics, and microbial community genomics.
