Multi-Mission Solar Movie

Image for Multi-Mission Solar Movie

The Multi-Mission Solar Movie is the first data visualization to combine imaging data from seven different instruments on-board three different Sun-observing spacecraft. Datasets from NASA and ESA archives and directly from the scientists were co-registered in position and synchronized in time. The data cover a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum - from visible light (at two to three electron volts per photon), through ultraviolet (about ten electron volts per photon) up to x-ray (50,000 to 100,000 electron volts per photon).

The movie illustrates the dramatically different spatial, spectral and temporal scales observed with solar phenomena. Hourly changes are visible early in the movie accelerating to a timescale of seconds as we zoom-in to the flare over solar active region AR9906. We zoom-out on a timescale of minutes to see the subsequent coronal mass ejection billow out from the Sun.
