Cheryl Kerfeld

Cheryl A. Kerfeld is head of the Education Program at the DOE Joint Genome Institute. Prior to joining the JGI, she developed and directed the Undergraduate Genomics Research Initiative (doi:10.1371/journal.pbio.0050141). Cheryl is also a structural biologist; her current research involves the structural and functional characterization of bacterial microcompartments and of proteins involved in photoprotection in photosynthetic organisms. Cheryl has degrees in Biology (B.A. and Ph.D.) and English (B.A. and M.A.) and has longstanding interests in bioinformatics and research-based and interdisciplinary education. Kerfeld is also an Adjunct Professor of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley.
