This animation shows how the sea surface temperature can cause hurricanes to form.  Areas shown in orange and yellow are above 82 degrees F (27.8 degrees C) which is required for hurricanes to be able to form. The oceans of the world are falsely colored in this animation.  The warmest temperatures are shown in bright yellow and the coldest temperatures are shown in dark green and black.
