NOAA Ship MILLER FREEMAN

Laboratory Spaces

The Miller Freeman is equipped with an electronics shop, a machine shop, and a bos'n shop. Each shop is supported with qualified personnel and is able to complete repairs to, and on occasion modify, scientific sampling equipment at sea. This capability has enabled adapting specialized equipment and fabricating damage parts to ensure project completion. In addition to support shops, the Miller Freeman has a total of six laboratory spaces that can be utilized by scientific personnel. Any anticipated needs should be discussed with the Command prior to a cruise. For spacial information on scientific labs, click on the desired link below for a description.

Fish Processing Lab

Fish Processing LabThe Fish Processing Lab ("Slime Lab") is approximately 300 sq. ft., located on the port side, just forward of the trawl deck on the main deck level. This space is the primary wet processing lab for trawl sampling. Aluminum processing tables are arranged in a 9 ft. sq. configuration with saltwater hand sprayers suspended above each of the four corners. Special water-tight doors opening aft and outboard, and removable table sections connecting to the main body of the processing area, allow specimens to be moved into the lab from the trawl deck, processed, then discarded down an overboard chute.

Other features include: 30 cu. ft. blast freezer, toxic chemical bins with power ventilation, freshwater, lab sink, counter top, 30 cu. ft. refrigerator, weather-tight doors, 3/4" saltwater supply, non- regulated electrical power, steam outlet, scupper drainage, telephone, fluorescent lighting, compressed air outlets

Rough Lab

Rough LabThe Rough Lab is approximately 240 sq. ft., located port side, just forward of the Fish Processing Lab. It is used as a staging area for outside work. A 4.5 cu. ft. -70 °F Ultra Cold Freezer for samples is located in this area. Scientific party foul weather gear is stowed here, as well as tools, hardhats, data forms and equipment used in the Fish Processing Lab. Stainless steel counter and storage shelves are available. There are three deep laboratory sinks, two with fresh water access and two with flexible saltwater hand sprayers.

Other features include: 9 cu. ft. flammable materials storage locker, compressed air outlet, non- regulated electrical power, deck drains, telephone, incandescent lighting, emergency eye wash

Ocean Chemistry Lab

Ocean Chemistry LabThe Ocean Chemistry Lab is approximately 170 sq. ft., located port side, just forward of the Rough Lab. This space is adjacent to the Wet Lab and the quarter deck area where there is access to the oceanographic winch wires on either side of the ship. The lab is equipped with stainless steel countertops, storage cabinets and a two-compartment sink with fresh and saltwater supplies.

Other features include: chemical fume hood, hazmat storage, regulated electrical power, deck drain, telephone, fluorescent lighting

Wet Lab

Wet LabThe Wet Lab is approximately 300 sq. ft., extending across the beam of the ship from the port quarterdeck to the starboard quarterdeck. Because of its ready access to both quarterdecks and oceanographic platforms, the wet lab is often used as a staging area for water and bottom sampling, plankton tows and CTD casts. Niskin bottles are mounted on stanchions in the middle of the lab; however, these can be removed to provide a large open area. Sliding doors opening to the quarterdecks on both sides provide an access in and out of the Wet Lab measuring 4½ ft. wide by 6 ft. high. Part of this lab's space is designated for safety equipment, due to its central location and vessel safety needs.

Other features include: dive tank air compressor, stainless steel, 2-compartment sink, fresh water supply, steam and compressed air outlets, deck drains, fluorescent lighting and access to the ship's centerboard trunk

Data Plot

Data PlotThe Data Plot area is approximately 220 sq. ft. of dry, air-conditioned space, located port side, forward of the Wet Lab and opposite the Electronics Shop. The ship's copy machine and scientific storage are located in this space, as well as the signal processing equipment for the Seabird 911 Plus CTD Rosette sampler, a 12kHz UGR echo sounder, Trimble and Northstar GPS receivers, and remote readouts for various 38khz and 50khz Simrad echosounders and RDI Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). Equipment rack, table top and desk space are available for mounting gear and planning operations. The shipboard Scientific Computer System (SCS) is also contained in this space. SCS uses a system of 23 sensors, including position, depth, meteorologic sensors, wind, light, temperature, and flourescence; wired oceanographic instruments including CTD's and winch readouts. Data plot supports a shipboard PC and printer and will accommodate 2 additional scientific PC's.

Other features include: air conditioning, regulated power, telephone, computer work stations, fluorescent lighting

Autosalinometer Room

Autosalinometer RoomThe Autosalinometer (Autosal) Room area is approximately 50 sq. ft. It is located on the lower deck, port side, outboard of the Acoustics Lab. The Autosal room is an air conditioned space with a double sink with fresh water supply, stainless steel counters and storage space. Two Guidline 8400 autosalinometers are located on the port side.

Acoustics Lab

Acoustic Lab The Acoustics Lab is approximately 152 sq. ft., located port side, just aft of the ship's store in the area that used to be called the Utility Lab. This space is also adjacent to the Autosalinometer Room. The lab is especially designed and equipped to support the Echo Integration Trawling operations for the Alaska Fisneries Science Center. It is equipped with countertops for mounting computers, an EK500 Echo Sounder and numerous computer systems for collecting and calibrating acoustic data.

Other features include: storage cabinets, regulated electrical power, telephone, radios, fluorescent lighting
